3 Reasons Why Bamboo Toothbrushes Are the Trend of the Future

Apr 14,2022
Over the past 10 years, we have seen the growing popularity of alternatives to plastic toothbrushes made from bioplastics and bamboo. Bamboo toothbrushes in particular have been seen as a symbol of the zero waste movement. This article covers 3 reasons why bamboo toothbrushes are the trend of the future.

1. Plastic toothbrushes are accumulating in our oceans, waterways, and landfills.

The bristles, handle and clear plastic packaging of traditional toothbrushes are made of nylon, polycarbonate, and PET respectively, and they are all oil in their essence.

If you think about it logically, the concept of brushing your teeth with a tool made entirely of non-renewable resources (while polluting and heating the planet) is absurd. No matter how you look at it, petroleum-based plastic toothbrushes are about to become obsolete.

2. Sustainable alternatives to plastic toothbrush handles already exist.

Before the creation of plastic toothbrushes in the 1930s, toothbrushes around the world were made from plant and animal parts.

Europeans used a handle made of wood to brush their teeth. Asians use bamboo handles to brush their teeth. Plant and animal-based bristles are used. Materials such as bamboo and wood are again used to make toothbrushes. In particular, bamboo is a very promising material because, unlike wood, it is a more sustainable and renewable material.

Why is bamboo considered environmentally friendly?

Unlike wood, bamboo is a member of the grass family. It regenerates, regenerates, and spreads much faster than wood.

Bamboo is very strong yet lightweight. It is often referred to as "green steel" due to its durability and hardness.

Bamboo can grow to full size in 3-4 months compared to trees that take more than 30 years to grow. Under the right conditions, it can grow 3 feet in 24 hours.

Bamboo absorbs twice as much carbon dioxide as trees. It also produces a lot of oxygen (30% more than most other plants).

Unlike plastic toothbrush handles, toothbrush handles made of bamboo are naturally biodegradable. Depending on the level of soil activity, bamboo handles can completely decompose in as little as 3 months, while plastic toothbrush handles can persist in the environment for thousands of years.

Bamboo is a natural antibacterial agent. The properties of the bamboo stalk itself can naturally prevent bacteria from growing on the surface of the bamboo. This makes bamboo an ideal material for hygiene products such as toothbrushes.

Are bamboo toothbrushes biodegradable?

This depends on the materials of bristles. If a bamboo toothbrush uses bristles made from pig hair, then yes, a bamboo toothbrush is fully biodegradable. If a bamboo toothbrush uses bristles made of traditional nylon, the toothbrush is biodegradable except for the bristles.

Finally, if a bamboo toothbrush uses bristles made of bio-based nylon, the bristles will eventually break down back into the soil (in the US, products are not classified as biodegradable unless they fully break down within 1 year, regardless of whether they end up in a period of decomposition after time).

Are Bamboo Toothbrushes Better?

Yes. Bamboo toothbrushes are better because they don't stress our planet. They are compostable and decompose in as little as 3 months. Plastic toothbrushes can last for thousands of years before breaking down, creating additional waste.

Bamboo toothbrushes are naturally antibacterial. This means your bamboo toothbrush will have a natural protective barrier against bacteria. Unfortunately, plastic toothbrushes do not have this protection.

Finally, they are as durable as plastic toothbrushes. When your dentist recommends replacing your toothbrush, they can easily last 3-4 months.

3. Alternatives to plastic toothbrush bristles are being developed.

Traditional toothbrushes use bristles made of nylon, a material derived entirely from petroleum-based fossil fuels. Because of its soft and flexible properties, nylon has been the material of choice for toothbrush bristles since the 1930s.

New alternatives to traditional nylon are emerging, using 100% vegetable oil as an alternative to fossil fuels. Because they replace non-renewable inputs with renewable materials, these alternatives will inevitably replace traditional nylon as we move towards a post-plastic society.

The above introduces the reasons for the popularity of bamboo toothbrushes in the future. If you want to buy a bamboo toothbrush, please contact us.
